Primate Notes: The Extraordinary Life of a Scientist Among Baboons / Robert Sapolsky; Translated from English. — Moscow: Alpina Non-Fiction, 2025. — 424 pages. This book is a memoir of more than twenty years of acquaintance of the famous primatologist Robert Sapolsky with East Africa. As a very young scientist, the author first came to a reserve in Kenya intending to test his hypotheses about human stress nature on wild baboons, which is not surprising given how similar primates are to humans in their biological and psychological reactions. In fact, Sapolsky does not separate himself from his subjects — the experimental animals, which is already obvious from the book’s title. This gives the narrative a special charm and power. Along with the author, who gave his favorites biblical names, we learn about their lives, sufferings, love, rivalry, power struggles, illnesses, and death. Equally vivid characters are the local people: farmers, rangers, petty chiefs, and ordinary workers. Over two decades in Africa, Sapolsky experiences his own dangerous adventures, friends' tragedies, and changes in political regimes—and writes about it so that you almost feel like a participant in the events.
