The Book of Disquiet
-
AuthorFernando Pessoa
First published fifty years after the author's death, "The Book of Disquiet" is a unique collection of aphoristic statements forming the autobiography of Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper in Lisbon, one of the alternate personalities of Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). This "autobiography without facts" is the poet's prose or poetry in prose, deeply lyrical reflections of a philosopher, verbal painting of an artist who sees through the transparent surface to the very essence of things. "The Book of Disquiet" is meant to hypnotize the reader and lead them into the very heart of that "disquiet," that very thirst-longing filled in all of Pessoa's works.
