"Fragments of a Lover's Speech" made Roland Barthes famous: after the book was published in 1977, the semiotic theorist was perceived as a new pop star. He was invited to TV shows alongside Françoise Sagan and Anna Golon (co-author of the "Angelique" novels), and interviews with him appeared in mass magazines like Playboy (which Barth once mocked in his book "Mythologies") and Elle. This success is due to the obvious resemblance of "Fragments" to a literary work with its own characters and plot. Thus, the critic and theorist's book about the speech of lovers itself becomes an example and model of love speech. This edition is supplemented with materials from Roland Barthes' seminars at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), published in 2007 under the title "Love Speech."
