Vienna, early 20th century. Lucjusz Kszelwski is a young man from an aristocratic Polish family. Unlike his brothers, who chose the traditional occupations of the nobility, he decides to become a doctor — however, just as he is in the midst of his studies, a world war breaks out in Europe. Enchanted by romantic stories about wartime surgery, he enlists in the army, expecting to be assigned to a well-organized field hospital. But when Lucjusz arrives at his post in the Carpathian Mountains, he discovers not a huge hospital but an improvised clinic housed in an old wooden church, which is also ravaged by a typhus epidemic. The remaining medical staff have fled except for a nun surrounded by strange mystery. Lucjusz finds himself the only doctor for many miles around, a surgeon, although he has never operated on anyone before. What happens at his post will forever change the life of Lucjusz and all those close to him. "Winter Soldier" is a story of war and medicine, a novel about the search for love amid the turbulent waves of European history, the mistakes everyone makes, and the precious chance to atone for them.
