When Umberto Eco was asked which woman from the world history of art he would like to spend an evening with, he named Uta of Naumburg. The narrator of this story, Nobel laureate Günter Grass, shares this opinion. During a writing tour in the GDR in the late 1980s, he sees her together with eleven other donor figures in Naumburg Cathedral. And since everything is possible on paper, he decides to invite all those whose likeness the artist created in the 13th century as realistic sculptures to dine in his garden. Unexpectedly, Uta's image meets him in reality today – in the squares of Cologne, Milan, and Frankfurt. Grass follows her everywhere, seeking an encounter. What form will she take for him today? What will they talk about? Originally intended as a chapter for the book "The Onion of Memory," the story was recently discovered in Grass's archive by his assistant Hilke Ozoling. Now, after the author's death, this novella, illustrated with the author's graphics, has seen the light.
